Elizabethan Gardens, Kenilworth

This is a recreation of the Elizabethan garden, originally built by Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, to impress Queen Elizabeth I when she visited Kenilworth Castle (now English Heritage) in 1575.

Here you can see some classic Elizabethan garden features:

A knot – along with hedges and walls, these have structure in the winter

Elevated walkway – the best way to see a knot garden is from above

Fruit trees – for blossom, scent, summer shade and fruit

Aromatic herbs – for scent in the garden, food flavouring and medicinal properties

Enclosure – for privacy…

…and seating.

If you have a chance to visit…do – it’s a lovely garden and castle. You’ll find nearly every other feature of a garden of its time here so a great place to study the subject: statuary, obelisks, arbours, fountain and water, more knot gardens, ornate aviary, bears on painted wooden poles, terraces, symmetry and order. Enjoy.
