Dandelion seedhead
Dandelion seedhead close up. If you remember your GCSE biology, you’ll know that when a flower is pollinated a seed is created in the ovary at the bottom of the flower. Dandelions have more than one flower on its flowerhead (I know, mind blown) and so produces more than one seed. Because the plant wants the seed to be spread far away from itself and it doesn’t have lovely fruit to tempt birds and animals to eat the seeds, it uses the wind to blow the seeds around. And that is why we get these lovely lollipops of delicate, feathery umbrellas that kids love to blow. Little do they know that this is probably their first step into promoting biodiversity!
