Ludlow, Shropshire

Had a flying look around Ludlow at the weekend. It’s a lovely town – so many different styles of architecture, lots of narrow winding streets, numerous independent shops. Far too many shots to choose from but I think that this photo perfectly sums up the history, character, architecture, feel, quirkiness and evolution of the town.

Ludlow is a very old town on the Welsh Marches – the grey area between England and Wales that constantly changed hands, borders and allegiances and saw many battles for centuries while the Welsh Princes and English nobility fought each other for control. So the area is awash with history and historic sites.

Much of the industrial era passed the region by which means that it still retains its open countryside, farming community and old buildings, which is such a tonic for someone who grew up in rural Wales and now lives in the industrial midlands. So green and so up-and-downy! I’ve announced that I’d like to move here when I retire – ha!

Instead I will keep on dreaming and visiting to discover more nooks and crannies, fabulous buildings, interesting features and good places to eat.
